One of Europe's oldest theatrical presentations, Josef Meier's original version of this Passion Play was first performed on the American Stage in 1932. The Passion Play continued as a touring production for several years, until becoming a permanent institution in the United States in 1939, when it was decided to settle the company in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. There, in a glorious natural setting, the nation's longest stage was constructed. Each year since then, during the summer months, the Greatest Story Ever Told has been re-enacted against a natural background of unparalleled beauty & realism. From 1953 until 1998, the Play was also hosted during the winter season by the Lake Wales, Florida, Amphitheatre. In August, 1998, the Black Hills Passion Play was produced in Canada for the first time since touring was discontinued in the 1960s. More than 10,000 Canadian visitors witnessed the production for two performances at Manitoba's famed, outdoor Selo Ukraina Amphitheatre site, near the town of Dauphin and the scenic Riding Mountain National Park wilderness area. Following its original mission of delivering its timeless message to audiences across the continent, the Black Hills Passion Play will be available for a limited number of bookings during the winter and spring months.
